Transition to Adulthood
Preparing youth, whom often have little or no family support, as they age out of care, as well as providing financial assistance and housing support gives them the freedom to see beyond their basic needs.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- 32 youth aged 18 or older, were helped with basic supplies or first month’s rest to move out on their own for the first time
- Batshaw Centres now have 2 group homes for youth aged 18-21, one for girls, one for boys.
HOW WE’RE IMPROVING
- Through philanthropic real estate partnerships, we are helping youth access suitable housing after they leave care
- We have created a dedicated emergency fund to youth as they transition out of care, providing them with a structured safety net if life plans don’t turn out exactly as planned.
- Batshaw Centres have opened two group homes, for youth aged 18-21 to help bridge the gap from care to independence.
WHY WE NEED YOU:
Youth in care, formerly in care & at- risk of being in care statistically are more vulnerable than their peers:
- Over 20% experience one or more homelessness episodes.
- 1 in 3 experience precarious housing
- 28% have taken pharmaceuticals for mental health needs (vs. 8 % of youth the same age)
